XB4406: MA Games Design: This Way Up!: Dr. Science's Design

In This Way Up!, Dr. Science is meant to be an enigmatic entity of the card game's ruleset and to help set the scenario for the players.

My first step is to decide which head ot use for the design, I used four different designs with one extra variant each.

The eight designs I drafted up for his head.

After deciding to use the third head for the design of Dr. Science, which I used because it captured the zany nature of the card game and its concept. The core themes I wanted to convey with Dr. Science was making him seem 'larger-than life', and bombastic.

I used a small set of colours for Dr. Science in order to keep his design simple, as to not draw the focus away from the actual cards' art and design. The way that Dr. Science is drawn also takes into account the design of the rest of the cards, keeping it with a zany atmosphere and motif befitting comical science experiements and professors. The hair is based on the Bride Of Frankenstein, most notably with the lightning bolt going through the hair, starting at the scalp and ending at the tip.

The remaining pieces of the outfit is in reference to the movie The Emperor's New Groove, specifically the scene where Yzma and Kronk are dressed in lab gear to poison Kuzko. The comical context of the movie helped with setting the tone and slim, angular design of Dr. Science.

Throughout the rulebook fo the game This Way Up!, I will insert different excerpts from Dr. Science's perspective in order to add humour to those playing the game with friends, or for those who are inspecting the game alone.
